Shannon O’Connor, a 51-year-old Los Gatos mother convicted of orchestrating alcohol-fueled sex parties involving teenagers, is set to return to court Wednesday morning as her high-profile sentencing continues in Santa Clara County Superior Court.
In court Tuesday, O’Connor faced emotional testimony from multiple families who said she betrayed their trust and exposed minors to dangerous levels of alcohol and alleged sexual exploitation at gatherings held between 2020 and 2021.
Victims and parents described grooming and heavy alcohol exposure.
The family of “John Doe 5” told the court O’Connor was once a trusted family friend before allegedly manipulating their son through social media.
“She blatantly lied to us and made us think she’d keep our son safe,” the family said, accusing her of grooming their son and teaching him how to dispose of alcohol containers after parties according to KTVU.
They also described a Halloween incident involving their 14-year-old son, saying he became heavily intoxicated after attending a gathering. “We picked him up early, shivering no shoes no shirt..” the family said. “While kids were getting drunk she was across town at another halloween party… Shannon left our 14-year-old child with alcohol and an open pool and hot tub.”
Valerie Doe, mother of John Doe 1 and John Doe 2, also testified, describing lasting trauma suffered by her children.
“Without significant incarceration, she remains a direct threat to the community. By grooming my children, she weaponized them.. They now suffer from deep-seeded guilt and trust issues,” she said, adding that she once found her sons “barely conscious and vomiting.”
Kate Doe, mother of Jane Doe 4, told the court she first reported O’Connor to authorities in 2021 and took steps to keep her daughter away from her, including traveling out of the area to Tahoe and Sea Ranch
She also alleged O’Connor attempted to send her daughter an airplane ticket.
She said her daughter later developed alcohol dependency issues and began drinking at night to sleep following exposure to O’Connor’s influence.
“She was taking weekly drink orders for these kids. She encouraged and managed sex acts. Our daughter was only 14 years old. She was quiet innocent. Before encounter with Shannon, she was sweet, silly and full of joy,” Kate Doe said.
The first victim impact statement of the day came from Jane Doe 4, now 20, who described lasting emotional damage.
“It is beyond me. I can not comprehend how someone could do ths. This represents who you are at your core,” she said. “For me what happened took away som manny happy parts of who I was.”
The sentencing hearing, overseen by Judge Elizabeth Peterson, began Tuesday and is expected to last up to three days, with the final sentence scheduled to be imposed on May 28. Additional victim impact statements are expected when the hearing resumes Wednesday morning.
